TODAY IN AI
Source: Reuters
1. Meta AI has quickly hit a major milestone, reaching 500 million users since its launch last fall. Mark Zuckerberg shared the news in a recent earnings call, highlighting the company's confidence in Meta AI becoming the most popular AI assistant by the end of 2024. He also noted impressive growth in AI-driven engagement across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
2. An impressive step forward: Boston Dynamics just dropped a new video of their electric Atlas robot in action. In the clip, Atlas autonomously handles warehouse tasks like moving engine parts between bins, showing off its improved adaptability, strength, and autonomy. These advancements are thanks, in part, to Boston Dynamics’ recent partnership with the Toyota Research Institute.
3. OpenAI hints at o1 timeline at London DevDay: The startup showed off a variety of new tools powered by the reasoning-focused o1, from an app that can order pies for you to one that can be used to perform drone tricks. It also announced new speech-to-speech capabilities, including five new voices that are “much more expressive and steerable.” Not to mention, the startup’s Head of Product teased that the full version of o1 is coming “soon.” And last but not least, OpenAI’s open-sourcing a new benchmark called SimpleQA that measures the factuality of language models.

FROM THE FRONTIER
New AI venture could transform protein design
Source: Archon Biosciences
Computational biologist David Baker could have ridden off into the sunset after earning this year’s Nobel Prize in chemistry. Instead, just weeks after receiving science’s top honor, Baker’s lab is already back with a new startup that could help us build more powerful treatments to fight diseases.
With a new round seed funding, Seattle-based Archon Biosciences will use AI to craft custom proteins that can boost the effectiveness of antibodies. The same technique can be used to get a better snapshot of how different compounds affect our bodies, potentially supercharging our ability to develop new medications.
Archon is one of numerous new startups using AI to speed up drug development: The industry could reach a value of $50B in the next decade, according to Morgan Stanley.
